It is no big surprise that HP’s profits are down. In times like these, if you make a profit, you are doing great. So in one aspect, HP, you made a profit, YEAH!
With people trying to save money where they can, it is no surprise to see the sales of personal computers down and their services division up. People are more willing to fix something instead of replace it.
The one surprising aspect is the printer supplies division. It was down 19% (only to the tune of $6 billion). “Cathie Lesjak, HP’s chief financial officer, said the decline in ink sales was a “reflection of a very tough economy — in a tough economy folks don’t print as much,”" this is only partially true. Last year, every printer company raised their prices. However, HP just did another price increase on the first of Febuary around the tune of 7% average. The reasoning behind the first price increase was understandable, the cost of the materials have went up. However, the reason behind the second price increase I believe is a slap in the face for HP’s customers. To paraphase the press release I received, ‘ Since we are not selling a lot, we need to increase prices to make more money off the people who are buying our products.’
The way HP put this press release out about increasing prices, in my mind, was not right. You do not increase the prices on customers just because the economy is bad. Consumers have it bad enough as it is. On the good side, we have seen an increase in interest in our products and services. Thanks HP.
Thanks goes out to the Associated Press for help on this article.

HP made an announcement on 2/4/09 that “A potential security vulnerability has been identified with certain HP LaserJet printers, HP Color LaserJet printers and HP Digital Senders. The vulnerability could be exploited remotely to gain unauthorized access to files”
The list of printers that are affected by this is pretty large, 12 different printer families and all the models in those families. HP says to download the latest firmware and update the printer.

This is just one of those rants against a good company. I like HP, they make good products. However, their support can be troublesome sometimes. I had a customer who bought a brand new HP 60 XL tri-Color Cartridge from somewhere else, and it didn’t work. It came up with an error message. This customer is tech savy, so he did all the trouble shooting by himself, solution, replace the cartridge.
He just spent $35 plus dollars on it, so he wasn’t going to buy a new one. So he asked me for the HP tech support line. He sat in my store while he called. Almost an hour later, he now has the cartridge coming in. The best part he said was he was told to shake the cartridge. How does shaking a cartridge that has a electrical problem help??
So the moral of the story is, if you have a problem with an Official HP cartridge, and decide to call Tech Support, have a lot of time, or at least an hour. I think their goal is to out wait you on the phone so they do not have to send you a free cartridge.

Well Lexmark’s numbers are out for 4th quarter, and no big surprize, they are down. They did at least stay in the black, but when your revenue drops 17% it hurts.
With all that is happening with Lexmark, it will be interesting to see how it ends up at year’s end. With Circuit City closing, we have seen a spike in people interested in the Lexmark #2 and Lexmark #3 replacements that we offer.

“Walking into my local Staples today, they had a nice big sign by the door. It simply read, Starting Feburary 1st, 2009 Staples will limit the number of cartridges you can recycle to 10 per month per person.
So instead of 3 per day, now it is 10 per month. A drastic reduction. Good news is they still recycle all HP, Dell, Lexmark, and Kodak cartridges.”
Talk about a rip off. That is a 66% reduction in the number of cartridges they will recycle.

People in the banking industry often say, don’t put all your eggs in one bucket. Why, if the bucket breaks, there goes the eggs. So the question is, how will the recent closing of Circuit City affect Lexmark?
Why does it matter? According to Toner News Lexmark has a large variety of printers in Circuit City, while companies like Best Buy do not. It will be interesting to see how badly this affects Lexmark’s bottom line, which right now is not doing to good.

Well, if you like the cheap generic Epson cartridges, good luck trying to find them. I won’t go into the details (You can read them here), but the only legal option for most companies to sell Epson Replacements is the refilled kind. Which rules out the Epson 69, 68, 78, 77, and newer series.
Samedayinkjet.com does have the Epson replacements as well as OEM Epsons. Check us out.
